Wine, food and fun with the Guv and CRA

To launch the 2014 legislative session, the Colorado Restaurant Association recently held its 23rd annual premier legislative event — aka the Blue Ribbon Reception — in the Capitol Peak Ballroom on the 38th floor of downtown Denver’s Grand Hyatt Hotel. Most of the attention at the reception was on the food, but there were also several distributors showcasing local wines, beers and other beverages. And of course, politics was served straight up on the menu, as always, at this event which culminates the first day of the session. The bipartisan crowd sipped and sampled to everyone’s delight.

Certifiable Winos

A few weeks ago I was invited by Doug Caskey, executive director of the Colorado Wine Industry Development Board, to be a student in the second-ever class of Colorado Wine Specialist Certificate seekers (the first course was given in Grand Junction; mine was held in Denver). Master Sommelier Wayne Belding taught this class in the spacious events hall at Balistreri Vineyards. It was attended by approximately a dozen enthusiastic wine industry representatives, including distributors, retailers and restaurant owners.

The Colorado Mountain Winefest, (CMW) celebrates the winemaking history of the Grand Valley as well as the rich bounty that the western portion of our state has to offer. It kicks off on Sept. 19 and runs through the 22 at the Colorado Wine Country Inn, the region’s only wine-themed hotel, which is set in the middle of the vineyards that back up to the striking Book Cliffs rock formations. Everything related to the festival will therefore take place within a few steps of the vineyards that surround Palisade.
